An unattended death can create both an emotional burden and a complicated property-cleanup problem. If decomposition has occurred, fluids and odor-causing material may affect flooring, subfloor, furniture, wall materials, or other porous surfaces.
Before cleanup begins
Do not disturb a scene that remains under the control of law enforcement, the medical examiner, or another authority. Once the property is released, the cleanup can be assessed.
What the assessment should consider
- Which materials are visibly affected
- Whether fluids migrated beneath flooring or into adjacent materials
- Whether odor remains after contaminated materials are addressed
- What removal and disposal steps are appropriate
See decomposition cleanup and the cleanup process.
